was
on the 1st January, 1887, $523,325. The Crown Agents having obtained advances at home to meet their expenditure on account of the Colony explains this large balance in hand. It was estimated that the Debit balance at the end of 1886 would have been $267,102. In fact, it did not amount to more than $191,512.

The sums estimated for Extraordinary Public Works and Military Defences were respectively $527,800 and $52,000. The sums spent have been $607,723 and $217,901, total excess of $245,825.
